Iris University

Location

The map shows the future Iris University properties located on the coast of Maringanha, in the city of Pemba, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. We have over 40 hectares or 99 acres of land in total. An 18-year journey procuring property is nearly complete.

We have made significant progress on the infrastructure of the future Iris University. We currently have nine classrooms, two administrative blocks, student and faculty bathrooms, an auditorium, a house of prayer, 14 furnished offices, a library, a sports center, a swimming pool, a beach front cafeteria, a soccer field, student dormitories, teachers’ residences, medical post, vehicles and buses, garden, private roads, 11 private water wells, private electrical systems, 2 computer labs, study areas, and 3 additional classrooms under construction.

The second phase of construction is underway and includes dormitories, a new library, and beautification of our campus.

Architecture

Overall Design Concept

The future Iris University and Genesis Architects wanted to create a truly African campus, reflecting the traditions of the people of Mozambique — a physical celebration of this land and culture.

The geometric patterns of traditional capulana garments were the inspiration for the layout and construction of the classroom block buildings.

These textile motifs are meant as a metaphor for the university itself, which aspires to prepare and enrich students who will go on to become vital threads in the fabric of a thriving society. As many exterior details as possible have been designed to foster tangible connections between the university, the city of Pemba, and Mozambique as a whole.

CONSTRUCTION FEATURES

The staggered layout will take advantage of natural wind patterns, while the deep overhangs will shield the classrooms from the heat of the sun. Situated on a slightly sloping hill, the layout of the rooms and buildings will also maximize inter-building distances and allow for magnificent views of the ocean from nearly every vantage point.

University Master Plan

Taking advantage of the topography of the land and its gentle slope to the coastline, the University will be situated to optimize the natural views from every building. With the recent acquisition of 25 hectares this 15-year journey of procuring suitable campus property is nearly complete.

The Iris University master-plan and physical model is currently being featured at the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) building in Singapore.

The graduates of Iris University will become vital threads in the fabric of a thriving society.

1.ANCILLARY BUILDINGS

The larger two and three-story ancillary and administrative buildings are consolidated and located further inland. Staff blocks are introduced together with vehicular accesses and parking facilities.

2.LOCAL INSPIRATION

The arrangement of the classroom blocks are inspired by the geometric patterns of capulana textiles. Limited building heights preserve the beauty of the land.

3.COMMUNITY COURTYARDS

Landscaped courtyards adjacent to the modular classroom blocks will serve a variety of educational, communal, and recreational uses.

4.AUDITORIUM WITH A VIEW

The Graduation Hall is the closest building to the Indian Ocean, to which it opens. It aligns to an axis (vista) with the Auditorium building, that sits at the highest topographical point of the land.

5.INDIAN OCEAN VIEW

Situated on a hill that slopes slightly toward the Indian Ocean, the University’s layout for Phase One will seek to frame the best possible views of its wide beaches and brilliant waters.

6. PUBLIC GREEN BELT

A central, open green belt landscaped with native trees and flowers complement the site’s airy proximity to the Indian Ocean.
